10 years ago today I was adopted by my mom. Before that I didn't have the easiest life. I was left in an empty apartment by the college student who was supposed to take care of me forever. A yorkie rescue found me and I was adopted by a lady who took me to a vet that said I had incurable mange and to "put me down." She gave me to an old man, who looked into my adorable eyes and decided to get a second opinion. He took me to a different vet that said my mange was genetic and likely curable with multiple treatments. That man is now my grandpa and honestly, I was a little hesitant when he gave me to my mom, but she eventually won me over.
She gave me treats and fed me. She snuggled me and gave me toys to play with. She made nooks for me to wriggle into with just the right amount of squeeze. She took me to the vet for months and months (even when I didn't want to go) and I got lots of shots and medicine to fight the mites. She bathed me every week (sometimes more than once a week) and even though I hate baths, they did make me feel less itchy. Eventually I was cured and my hair came back.
Long story short, I was a demodex-infested, crusty, hairless rat, but look at me now!!! So please, if you're considering getting a furry companion like me, check with your local animal rescues and shelters. And if you hear about a dog with demodex mange, remember that it's not contagious, don't be afraid to adopt them, and give them a little extra love from me. ❤️
